King Triton

      Imposing, severe, just and comprehensive, Triton is the father of seven daughters. Even though he got really mad at Ariel, he worries about her and loves her very much. I believe he is one of the best Disney dads, for even though he destroyed Ariel's collection of human objects, he only did so trying to prevent Ariel from getting hurt and the redeems himself at the end transforming her into a human so that she can be with her beloved prince.

The Sisters

      Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella and Alana. These are Ariel's six older sisters. Even though they don't have a very active participation in the movie, their personalities are better explored in the series. In the original H. C. Andersen's tale, it's the sisters who help the little mermaid to become human.

     Their names were not chosen randomly. Here's what they mean:

Aquata - Related to water through it's Latin root aqua.

Andrina - Related to the word "sword" through the Greek word andros. Also related to the Adriatic sea.

Arista - Related to the Latin root of the word "family", such as aristocracy, aristocrat and so on. Also the name of a high-born one. Attina - Borrowed from Alan Menken's opera "Atina, the Evil Queen of the Galaxy".

Adella - Related to the root words of "noble" through adele.

Alana - Feminine for Alan (Menken), the soundtrack composer.
